HMMT Frequently Asked Questions
What is HMMT?
HMMT is one of the largest and most prestigious high school competitions in the world, attracting close to 1000 students from around the globe. Some are even top scorers at national or international olympiads. The entire competition is run by students from Harvard, MIT, and other nearby schools.
When is HMMT going to be hosted?
Events will most likely start on Friday, November 8, 2024 and end on Sunday, November 10, 2024
Where is HMMT going be hosted?
The Friday events will be hosted at MIT (77 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA) while the tournament and Sunday education will be held at Harvard (1 Oxford Street, Cambridge, MA)
Where will I be staying during HMMT?
Le Meridien Cambridge Hotel (20 Sidney St., Cambridge, MA 02139)
How much will it cost for me to go to HMMT?
The total cost varies based on location because of flight costs, but for Nashville residents, the total cost will be around $250 ($15 registration + $110 room + $120 flight) while for Memphis residents the total cost will be around $500 ($15 registration + $110 room + $360 flight)
How hard are the problems on HMMT?
November Competition - Problems range from mid-AMC to upper-AIME level questions
February Competition - Problems range from mid-AIME level to national olympiad level questions
How is the competition organized?
All Individual Tests have 10 problems and give 50 minutes (worth 800 points for the team)
All Team Rounds have 10 problems and give 60 minutes (worth 400 points for the team)
All Guts Rounds have 36 short-answer questions and give 80 minutes (worth 400 points for the team)
(During the Guts Round, all teams gather in a lecture hall and send runners to retrieve problem sets as well as report their answers. Grading is immediate and scores are posted in real time)
November Competition:
Individual Tests - General Round (draws on all high school math subjects) and a Theme Round (based around a common theme)
Team Round - Short-answered based questions similar to the Individual Tests
Guts Round - Divided into 3 sets of questions of varying difficulty
February Competition:
Individual Tests - Algebra test (covers topics from high school algebra and number theory), Geometry test (covers high school Euclidean geometry), Combinatorics test (covers high school combinatorics)
Team Round - Proof-based questions a bit harder than the Individual Tests
Guts Round - Divided into 4 sets of questions of varying difficulty
How many people are there on each team?
November Competition - 4-6 students
February Competition - 6-8 students
Is there a next stage if I do really well at HMMT?
The top 50 students from the February Competition are invited to compete at the HMMT Invitational Competition which is a 4-hour, 5-problem olympiad-style exam
Are there any requirements for me to apply to be part of one of TMC’s HMMT teams?
No! Students of all math levels and locations are welcome to apply. However, team member selections will be mostly based on competition math experience and results
