Q: What is the MUS Math Tournament?

A: MMT, or the Memphis Math Tournament, is a middle school math competition. The event organization and problem-writing were all completed by top high-school students who are passionate about spreading their love for the subject to others. With this competition, we are seeking to introduce people to competition math as well as recognize those who are already some of the best in their region.

Q: Are calculators allowed in the competition?

A: No. Calculators and other external resources are not allowed during the competition. For more information, consult our honor policy, which can be found in our competition packet located above.

Q: When is MMT going to be hosted?

A: The competition will be hosted on Saturday, October 25, 2025, from 9:30 to 3:45. However, you must register earlier.

Q: Are there any awards for competing?

A: Top scorers in each round will receive recognition as well as a trophy.

Q: Where is MMT going to be hosted?

A: The whole competition will be held at Memphis University School (6191 Park Ave, Memphis, TN 38119).

Q: How is the competition organized?

A: The tournament consists of an individual round, team round, and elimination round.

Individual Round: An individual 45-minute round consisting of 20 challenging problems.

Team Round: A team-based 20-minute round where teams of up to four competitors work together to solve 10 challenging problems.

Countdown Round: A fast-paced, individual competition where the top highest-scoring competitors face off in a single-elimination bracket.

Q: How many people are there on each team?

A: At most 4 people

Q: Are there any requirements for me to attend?

A: This competition is only open to those who have not yet attended high school. It is geared toward middle schoolers but elementary schoolers are welcome.

Q: How difficult is the exam?

A: The competition is tailored to students of all levels of experience with mathematics. The problem difficulty will range from early AMC 8 to AMC 10.

Q: How much does it cost to attend?

A: In person: $15 per competitor

Q: May I participate without a team?

A: Yes, you can apply only as an individual competitor. Those without a team will be grouped with other individuals to compete together for the team rounds. However, these teams will not be eligible for team trophies or awards.
